SIDE BAR – The Continuing Global Education Crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic deepened what was already a global learning crisis. Most education systems in the world have been severely affected by education disruptions with devastating consequences for children’s learning and well-being.
Learning poverty has increased by a third in low- and middle-income countries. An estimated 70% of 10-year-olds (up from 57% pre-COVID) are unable to understand a simple written text. Learning recovery and acceleration requires sustained national political commitment, from the highest political levels to all members of society.
